
Chicago health officials are investigating a Salmonella Outbreak linked to a taqueria in the city’s Avondale neighborhood that has left 20 people sick and 10 people requiring hospitalization.
According to the Chicago Department of Public Health, the infected people had consumed food prepared from a taqueria at Carnicería Guanajuato, located at 3140 North California Avenue.
Carnicería Guanajuato voluntarily closed the taqueria on September 8, and those who purchased prepared food in the taqueria or supermarket section of the location since August 29 were advised to throw it away.
Those who have eaten prepared foods from the taqueria or supermarket section of Carnicería Guanajuato since August 29 may have been exposed to Salmonella.
According to the CDPH, an environmental assessment of the grocery store and guidance on safe food handling and environmental cleanliness were conducted.
Symptoms of Salmonella They usually last four to seven days and most infected people recover without needing treatment.
Although antibiotics are not necessary for recovery from most infections, elderly and immunocompromised people may need treatment.
According to the CDPH, most infected people develop diarrhea, abdominal pain, or fever between six hours and six days after eating contaminated food.
Those who may have become ill after eating food from Carnicería Guanajuato should file a food poisoning complaint at outbreak@cityofchicago.org.
