Geno Smith on DUI arrest: ‘Hold back on judging me’

Geno Smith has spoken out after being arrested on suspicion of DUI, asking his followers to hold off on judgment.

“Being arrested brings a taint onto the reputation that is impossible to undo, no matter what really happened,” Smith tweeted.

“I’m asking all of you to hold back on judging me the same as you would do for a friend or family member. I’ll have more to say down the road & ask that you bare [sic] with me.”

The quarterback was arrested early Monday morning in King County, Wash and booked at 5:10 a.m. on a DUI charge. He was released at 12:27 p.m. on $1,000 bail and is awaiting a trial date, per King County records.

TMZ reported that he was initially pulled over for speeding.

“Geno is fully cooperative with the investigation,” Smith’s attorney Jon Fox told the AP in a statement. “I hope that an open mind can be kept by all as the facts are ascertained.”

Smith, the former second-round pick of the Jets, has spent the past three seasons in Seattle backing up Russell Wilson. Due to Wilson’s finger injury, Smith appeared in four games this season, starting three.

Smith completed 68.4 percent of his passes, throwing for 702 yards on 7.4 yards per attempt, with five touchdown passes and one interception. He is set to be a free agent this offseason.
