New Delhi: Since the Covid-19 pandemic hit the world, luxury cars took precedence among the new launches in India. Out of the total 18 new introductions on the market in 2020-21, 13 were luxury cars including 10 SUVs. Even luxury carmakers preferred SUVs to sedans.

Luxury cars are likely to repeat the performance in 2021 also. More than 70 new luxury vehicles, including brand new vehicles, facelifts and new variants, are set to be launched this year. Industry experts expect the luxury car market to record sales of 28,000 to 33,000 units in 2021, up from 20,000-21,000 last year.

In 2020, Mercedes Benz Ag had 4 new launches. Ferrari had three new launches and all of them were priced above INR 3 crore. Seven of the premium vehicles were in the price range of INR 1crore and INR 3 crore, two in the range of INR 50 lakh and INR 1crore and 3 in the price range of INR 25lakh and INR 50 lakh.

India’s super-luxury car (priced above INR 2 crore) sales have apparently been on a growth trajectory for the past few years. The niche segment grew more than three fold from about 150 cars in 2018 to about 500 cars in 2020. But the overall volume of the segment remains too low to be significant. Though India is one of the countries having the highest number of millionaires in the world, it doesn’t figure among the top 25 markets for such cars in the world.

The car is powered by a V10 naturally-aspirated 640 hp engine, capable of accelerating from 0-100 km/hr in 3 seconds, 0-200 km/hr in 9 seconds and a top speed of 310 km/h.
