No one can make a game nearly unplayable for years and years and then get you excited about buying a new version like Nintendo, and let me tell you, they’ve done it again. Beloved Gamecube game Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door has a reputation for being one of the best Mario RPGs out there, second only to Super Mario RPG, and considered by most to be the best of the Paper Mario series. And now, as announced at Thursday’s Nintendo Direct, it’s the latest game in Nintendo’s extensive catalog of hits to receive an HD touch-up and an upcoming Switch release.
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door take the formula established by the N64 paper mario – genuinely fun writing focusing on the monsters and minions of Mario games, a dash of RPG number crunching and clever mini-games, and it perfects it. Later Paper Mario games, such as color splash and The king of origamiThey would build their adventures around twists in the game, but Gate of a thousand years is Mario’s last great pure comedy RPG, since the next title, the Wii Paper Super MarioIt would combine the role-playing game with the more traditional Mario platforms.
Paper Mario’s art style ages incredibly well even in three dimensions, but the Switch remake looks truly remarkable, taking Mario’s artistic and artisanal vision of the world and making it look genuinely handmade at times.
