The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were assisting California Highway Patrol officers with a pursuit. around 12:20 p.m. which began after a man failed to stop after officers attempted to stop him for a traffic violation. The chase began on Norwood Avenue and ended on Greenback Lane after the suspect entered Interstate 80. According to the sheriff’s office, the suspect struck a motorcyclist while he was being chased. He eventually exited his vehicle and had a knife in his hand, the sheriff’s office said. The sheriff’s office said one of his deputies and two CHP officers fired their weapons after the suspect was seen holding the knife. The sheriff’s office said it is still unclear whether a deputy or a CHP officer fired his gun first. Both the suspect who was shot by police and the injured motorcyclist were taken to the hospital in critical condition, Sacramento Metro Fire said. The sheriff’s office said the suspect died at the hospital. No sheriff’s office deputies or CHP officers were injured during the chase or shooting. It is unknown how many shots were fired, the sheriff’s office said. The sheriff’s office said authorities knew the suspect, but his full criminal history is not yet known.
